What the prayer asks

The prayer uses a soldier’s language: weapons, shield, enemies. The meaning is to ask for God’s protection against evil, injustice and violence, through the saint’s intercession.
Notice that the center of the text is Jesus Christ and God’s mercy. Saint George appears as one who intercedes, not as the source of power. In some places the devotion also blends with other religious traditions; here we speak of the Christian tradition.
