Who was Saint Benedict
Pubblicità
Benedict was born around the year 480 in Nursia, Italy. As a young man he left Rome to live in prayer in a cave. Later he gathered disciples and founded the monastery of Monte Cassino, around 529.
He wrote a Rule for the life of monks that Benedictines still follow today. Pope Paul VI named him patron of Europe in 1964, and the Church celebrates him on July 11. The Benedictine tradition became linked to the motto “ora et labora”: prayer and work.
