Your BMI
The formula behind the number
BMI comes from dividing your weight by the square of your height. This calculator follows the formula published by the CDC: 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)2 for US units, or simply kg ÷ m2 for metric.
Does BMI work equally well for everyone?
Not perfectly — BMI can’t tell muscle from fat, so it tends to overstate body fat in muscular or athletic people and understate it in older adults who’ve lost muscle mass. Treat it as a rough screening number, not a diagnosis.
What do the different BMI ranges mean?
Below 18.5 is classified as underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 as normal weight, 25 to 29.9 as overweight, and 30 or above as obesity.
When is it worth seeing a doctor about my BMI?
If your number falls outside the normal range, or you simply have questions about your weight or health more broadly, a healthcare provider can look at the full picture in a way a single number never can.
Check Your BMI Online, Free
Body Mass Index is a quick, widely used way to gauge whether your weight sits in a typical range for your height. It won’t replace a full health checkup, but it’s often the first number a doctor, trainer, or insurer looks at.
This calculator supports both US units (pounds and feet/inches) and metric (kilograms and centimeters), and follows the CDC’s standard formula, so your result lines up with what you’d get from a clinical chart. Fill in your weight and height above to see your BMI and category right away.
