The math behind the split

The tip is your bill multiplied by the tip percentage. Add that to the bill for the total, then divide by the number of people for the per-person amount. This assumes everyone splits evenly; if you’re splitting by what each person actually ordered, calculate each share’s tip separately instead.

How much should I tip in the US?

Most sit-down restaurants expect somewhere between 15% and 20%, and 20% or higher isn’t unusual for great service in bigger cities. Delivery and bar tabs tend to follow their own, slightly different norms.

Do I tip before or after tax?

Etiquette guides typically recommend calculating the tip on the subtotal before tax, but in practice plenty of people just tip on the final total for simplicity, and both are widely accepted.

Split Any Bill and Calculate the Tip, Free

Nobody wants to do percentage math at the table. Enter what you owe, pick a tip percentage, and set the number of people splitting it — the calculator handles the rest, showing the tip amount, the grand total, and exactly what each person owes.

Tipping norms vary by situation: 15 to 20% covers most US sit-down dining, delivery orders and bar tabs often run a little different, and generous service in a big city can easily push past 20%. Whatever the occasion, this tool gets you to a fair number fast.
